Good for you, Rebecca Wiese. Eat local. Help support our own farmers like Hannah, and enjoy fresher, healthier food. Thanks for the thoughtful comments.

Mary, I am helping to organize a tribute to Jim Autry (he turned 90 yesterday) to be given to him at the Poetry Palooza! April 6. Would you be willing to write a letter acknowledging his influence as part of a packet of letters? Would you help us identify contact information for any other poets that appeared at the Iowa Poetry Festival years ago (who are still living)? I can send you a few names in case you might know how to best reach them. I would love to forward information to you about the Poetry Palooza. Could I e-mail you?

I pretty much decided this summer that I would avoid buying any vegetables that are not at least regional. It seems to be the wise thing to do for all the environmental reasons, but partly I have noticed that my vegetables last SO MUCH longer when I purchase them locally. I do buy an occasional avocado year-round, in addition to limes and lemons. It has been a challenge as the winter months move in to change recipes to reflect food options.

Today, I went to my local Farmers Market in Decorah, Iowa and bought onions, broccoli, spinach, radishes, garlic, from Humble Harvest, cabbage and fingerling potatoes from other local vendors. I notice that the next and last Farmer's Market is December 17, and I will stock up. Thankfully the local food coop does sell many choices of regionally grown veggies . It will be interesting as the winter moves on, to see what the availability is. It has been a fun experiment, as I envision truckloads of vegetables moving their way across the country from California to Iowa and knowing that no one is making me be a part of that process.
